Rare and Beautiful 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 Convertible! Specifications: 135bhp, 303 cu. in. V8 engine, Hydramatic automatic transmission, independent front suspension, rear leaf springs, four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 119.5 Of the nearly 290,000 Oldsmobiles produced in 1949, a mere 5,434 were Eighty-Eight convertibles. This particular example was acquired by its current owner who owned the car for a long period of time. It is finished in Fire Mist Red with a tan Haartz cloth convertible top, and remains in excellent overall condition. The chrome had been redone and presents a lovely shine. The red leather / cloth insert upholstery and red carpeting on the interior both retain an as-new appearance, and the engine compartment seems to have been very well detailed. Extras include wide white wall tires, a radio, clock, factory heater, and Guide fog lamps. The impact of the 88 cannot be underestimated. In addition to inspiring the song, Rocket 88, and the slogan, “make a date with an Eighty-Eight”, the sporty Oldsmobile helped solidify a niche for affordable, lighter cars fitted with high-end power and a fresh style – a formula that has always fared well with a younger market. This particular low-mileage 88 Convertible runs and drives very well and is one of the finer examples in existence, delivering race-winning performance with eye-catching style. It is a true icon of American culture.
